Most people do not realize they can get their business on Google for free.

You probably search for businesses every day and choose from one of the listed businesses on the first-page result past the advertisements.

So when you have a business website online you want to do everything you can to be on that front page of results above those millions of other websites.

This is where "Search Engine Optimization" (SEO) comes in.

We have the 5 key steps to getting your site on the first page of Google.

1-Submit Your Site to Google for Indexing

Search engines like Google use little internet robots to scan the world wide web and index billions of website pages every day.

Google will probably find your site without having to do anything but that is about as productive of standing on the sidewalk waiting for a taxi ride to show up in front of you.

You can speed up the indexing process by submitting your website to Google directly.

One way of submitting your website is by using this link: Submit Your Website to Google

Another way is by using SEO plugins that are available through WordPress and submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console.

Once your site is indexed you can use the Google Search Console to submit each of your new posts for indexing through the crawl application with a process called “Fetch as Google“.

All this linking will help keep Google up to date with the changes on your site much faster than waiting for them to find the changes.

Google isn't the only search engine in town. Bing has over 25% of the search engine market so would not be a bad idea to head over to their “Webmaster Tools” to submit your site there as well.

Is All This Sounding Too Complicated?

Don't Worry!  We too were newbies when it came to SEO but we had help from Wealthy Affiliate.

2- USE APPROPRIATE KEYWORDS
Search engines rely on keywords within your website to rank it according to the type of niche or audience you are writing for.

Keywords can be single words or phrases that identify what your site is talking about the most. It can provide a good idea of what your niche is about from the common words or phrases you use throughout your site.

Search engines like Google will see trends in your content, posts, and topics and help direct traffic to your site if it appears the person searching is looking for your specific type of niche.

Having the right keywords can make or break whether your audience can find you.

Let's say you have a coffee shop. In your area, they may describe a coffee shop by the term "Cafe" so you may want to adjust your content keywords accordingly.

It is also important to indicate your location on your site to narrow down the search from a few million to a few hundred choices for your specific region.

People may do a search as "Cafe in Orlando".

Luckily there are tools available to find keywords that are not only appropriate for your site but some keyword phrases that may rank better than others.

Wealthy Affiliate also has Keyword Search Tool called Jaaxy to help you find the best keywords to use on your site.

It is important not to overuse your keywords in your content. Google can actually penalize you if you overuse them in your content.

The general rule is to use it once at the beginning of your post but then write naturally.

Google thrives to provide good content to their searches so they will not be fooled by tactics at repetitive keywords throughout a blog just to try at getting ranked the first page.

3-META TAGS
The information that shows up in search engine results is likely not taken directly from the website.

Meta titles and meta descriptions is the text you see on the search engine result pages to describe your site.

You can customize the meta information to provide a clear description of your website so the person searching can have a good idea of what your site has to offer to them.

As we stated earlier, you can use SEO plugins that allow you to customize the meta information for each page or posts on your site.

A good SEO tool will provide you with details of how much information can be placed on the meta tag to ensure it is not cut off in the search result description.

4-LINK TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Search engines like Google appreciate sites that are interactive and active in the community.

The more active linking your site has the more Google may boost your site in the rankings, not to mention people will share your site with others.

Google bots crawl sites by the links, so the more links leaving and coming to your site the better chance your site will get discovered.

To boost your brand make sure to get your site on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Instagram to name a few.

5-Google Listing on Local Directories
If you have a brick and mortar business, then you will want to use Google My Business.

Over 50% of internet users are on mobile and that number keeps growing.

Google My Business will make it easy for people to find you when they use their mobile search or maps.

Thanks so much for sharing these tips. I’ve been working really hard on my website creating content using good keywords, linking to social media, even writing guest posts for other sites to link back to my site but I still wasn’t indexed in google. I didn’t realize that step was as easy as submitting my website to them. Hopefully now I can really start working toward getting my site ranked.

Glad to help! Just remember that although your site is indexed it will take time to get your rank up to the top 10. If you follow the training at Wealthy Affiliate, making sure to have low hanging fruit keywords and back linking from your guest blogs certainly help get you to the top 10 ranking faster.

      Keep up the great work.

      Cheers

Google has many tools available to webmasters. Google Console and Google Analytics can be very helpful in understanding which direction your site is going. Knowing which part of your site is converting well versus what is not working. There is a multitude of other tools that Google provide which will become increasingly important down the line. Google being about 75% of the search engine traffic it certainly is worthwhile to see what they have to offer to make your website blast to the top of their search rankings. Cheers
