How To Start A House Cleaning Business

How To Start A House Cleaning ServiceOwn your home? Do you enjoy cleaning it?  Most people that own their own home will answer “no” to the cleaning question.  For this reason, if you start your housekeeping business, you likely will have no problem having customers. In this post, I will provide my suggestions on how to start a house cleaning business.

Most people that own their own home will answer “no” to the cleaning question.  We all like the idea of owning our own home, but then to clean it for years is another story.

That is why housekeeping or house cleaning services have been around as long as there have been homeowners that work outside or away from their home. When you work outside of your home, and then the drive home takes an hour or more, the last thing on your mind is cleaning.

There is something so calming about coming home to a clean house at the end of the day, and not having to clean after work or on the weekend.

As long as there are homeowners there will be house cleaning jobs or businesses available.

At this point I must confess, I never had a house cleaning service of my own. Did you see that list I made, there is no way I could have done all of those in my FULL lifetime.  Brenda never ran that type of business either, and you can trust me when I say  I would not recommend you hire her to clean house either, she will be the first to admit that. (I hope, as I will be in big doodoo when she reads this).

That said, we did hire someone two sisters, who ran their own cleaning business and it was great. They were very thorough with the service they provided for the close to 3 years they came to our home. Due to the fact I work from home, I would have regular conversations with them on how they started their business, how others they know are in the same business, and this has helped in collecting the information required for this post.

So, how do you start your own house cleaning service?

Start House Cleaning Business

I will split up the choices in 2 categories, those who have experience and those without experience cleaning houses.

1-No Experience

Start by working for somebody else, like a cleaning service agency. Ok, I know you are saying that is not how to start a business. Working for somebody else is what you want to avoid. That may be true, but if you have no experience with going into other people’s homes to clean, you need the experience and there is no easier way than working for somebody else.  Hey, the upside is you will be getting paid for this education.

Ok, Ok, I know  what you are saying, Paul, that is not how to start a business. Working for somebody else is what you want to avoid. Hey, the upside is you will be getting paid for this education. The other reason it is a good idea to get this experience is to see if you actually like cleaning other people’s houses, it’s one thing to clean your own house but to clean other people’s homes can be a big eye opener.

Another reason is to build a clientele base. Now I am not suggesting you poach the clients from the agency for which you  are working. Instead, the client’s home you are cleaning may refer you to friends, family neighbors and so on. Word of mouth is the strongest form of referral. If you do good work for them, and if you are able to talk to them, you can explain how you are planning on starting your own business.Word of mouth is the strongest form of referral. Word of mouth is the strongest form of referral. If you do a good work for them, and if you are able to talk to them, you can explain how you are planning on starting your own business. Then you can slowly build your clientele base on a part-time basis, slowly cutting down the time you work for the agency and increase your own business.

This way you maintain a regular income while building your business. There aren’t many businesses you can start where you get paid for your education, and build your clientele through the company from you are getting your training.  Genius strategy if I may say so myself!

2-Experienced

As an experienced cleaner you may be coming back to the business, or maybe you were working for an agency but want to start your own business.

Then I would say it would not hurt to look at choice 1 to make contacts, get referrals to new clients. Depending on your financial situation, working for an agency can provide a buffer income until you grow your client base.

Another option is by word of mouth with family and friends, put yourself, your business out there. Hand out flyers, speak with community and health centres, put notices on billboards in apartment buildings, speak with building managers to name a few options.

If the word or mouth and flyers not working for you, then you may need to look at paying for some advertising. You can  set up a free or paid ad in Kijiji, or put ads in your local paper.

Tips Starting House Cleaning Business

Training: as discussed in step one, working for somebody else is the best training to gain experience and network with potential future clients

Supplies: take into account the number of cleaning supplies and equipment you will need. Price your work accordingly as this is an added expense.

Insurance: liability insurance in case of injury or accident within the client’s home.

Transportation: how are you going to get to your customers. ideally having your car with your company branding would be ideal. Keep track of mileage to claim as an expense. Again track the costs of your car, gas, maintenance replacement costs all add up.

Safety: don’t go to potential client’s home alone, bring a colleague, friend partner along. If possible, it may be wise to partner up with somebody to run this business. Not only it would be safer, but also make your job cleaning easier, sharing tasks or roles, ability to talk with someone while working.

Health considerations: If you can use your own products, ensure they don’t release harmful gases or chemicals. If you are doing this business daily for 8 hrs day, exposure to these chemicals can cause serious health conditions. Try to use general household items that have low VOCs. Another health concern relates to repetitive movement injuries. Choose cleaning tools to avoid excessive strain movements and having a partner to work with would help by giving the opprotunity in switching roles from one house to the next.

Market Your Housecleaning Business Online: You too can create your online business site to refer people to view information about your service. It will also allow you to have current clients to go and write testimonials about the excellent service you provide. Your current clients can refer their family and friends to your site to visit first. With a professional looking website will help establish a trust that you are a well established and functional business.

To build your website, the only web-hosting platform I recommend is Wealthy Affiliate. You probably never heard of it as they don’t advertise like WIX or Go Daddy, but they have everything those sites have PLUS so much more at a fraction of the cost. Heck, you actually sign up for free and can host 2 sites for free as long as you like. Only when you are ready, then you can go Premium and make your housecleaning business soar! Make any business fly with the wealth of information and support you can get through Wealthy Affiliate.

They will not only teach provide you with all the tools and training to start your own website but will also teach you about marketing. How with any business you plan to start, find a niche you are able to focus on and capitalize on that niche.

Now you are probably saying, “I’m starting a house cleaning service, that is my niche!” That is where you are wrong, house cleaning is a very broad type of business service. You need to narrow it down!

House Cleaning has many small branches, sure the most popular is the one where you go to someone’s home weekly or every 2 weeks. Think about the others you can brand your business around.

Niche House Cleaning Businesses can include but not limited to the following:

  • Open House Cleaning Services – you can market your business through realtors or sale by owner companies
  • Post Renovation Cleaning Services -market yourself through contractors
  • Post Event or Party Cleaning Services – you can anchor your business with party/wedding planners, caterers or flower shops.
  • Home Infestation /Hoarder Cleaning Services – you can link with local health and community care units
  • Homes With Pets Cleaning Service -working with pet stores, veterinarians that refer their customers to your service. You can advertise as being pet-friendly. You may think it is a given, but you would be surprised the leverage you will have with identifying specific details such as pet-friendly, or things like organic cleaning solutions, and green products. You may already be doing all of those, but think about all the ad campaigns that are out there that label their products with the trends of the month and it is proven to work.  It’s like having a bottle of water with a label saying cholesterol-free, they are all cholesterol free, but people with concerns with cholesterol will likely grab the labelled one over the non-labelled.

That is a short list of ideas, some of those listed above would have even more specific branches from which you can brand your company around.
