 Retail Merchandiser jobs and business

Here is what you do as a Retail Store Merchandiser

As a merchandiser, you need to ensure that products appear correctly in the stores or on websites.

You are responsible for having products appear at the right time for the right price and to have sufficient stock to meet demand.

Why do we need Retail Merchandisers?

Companies can succeed or fail depending on the abilities of its retail merchandiser.  It’s one thing for a company to have an amazing product but if nobody knows about it, or has the wrong pricing or no stock…then what good is it to have a product that nobody is able to buy.

The retail merchandiser is the consumer’s guide to finding the right product, at the right place for the right price.

The skills you need to be a retail merchandiser.

  • Maintain awareness of happenings and developments in the business and commercial world.
  • Able to cope with pressure.
  • Fantastic communication skills.
  • Remarkable interpersonal skills.
  • Leadership skills are an asset for merchandiser management jobs.
  • Analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to make quick but responsible decisions.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.

The tools you need as a retail merchandiser.

The tools required to be a merchandiser are quite basic.

You basically need transportation to get to the different retail locations and tools to maintain the signage and point of sale displays.

Retail Merchandising Job versus Business.

You can have a work career as a retail merchandiser.

Many merchandising companies do hire grads with degrees to specific roles such as business, marketing or accounting to name few.

They will also hire people without any formal education for roles as store merchandisers to stock shelves, set up displays and maintain point of sale displays.

The retail merchandising business has many areas somebody can work.

You can also start your own merchandising business by starting on a smaller scale.

Although starting a business takes a few more steps, it is still my recommended route to take compared to getting a retail merchandising job.

The benefits of starting your home based business greatly outweigh the easy route of going out and getting a job.

Retail merchandising sounds like it could be interesting. Does a retail merchandising position involve the designing of the marketing campaign or does this person implement the campaign designed by the marketing team?

You also mention that some companies will hire someone that does not have a degree. What type of experience would a person like this need to land this type of position?

Thanks. This gives me something to think about.

The retail Merchandising industry comprises of many levels. Most merchandising companies offer all the levels of service while others may only offer a few. It duties can be as easy as restocking shelves to requiring a full marketing campaign. The retail store merchandise is somewhere in the middle. Where they check in on the stores, make sure the displays are presentable, up-to-date and stocked. They would also meet with store managers to provide updates, which is also done by distributors, but varies from company to company on how they structure their services to the stores they are providing the product. In many cases it has to do with what volume of product the companies product is sending to the stores that may alter the roles or combine roles.

Great information man. But I think I don’t want to be a retail merchandiser because it’s quite tiring. I guess I want to be an affiliate marketer like you.

I agree with you 100%! Although working online isn’t for everyone so I like to share options and our experiences in the field. Affiliate marketing still takes a lot of work but it is awesome that it can be from home or anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
