You decided you would like to start working from home, but do you know what is needed? Online work that can be done as a home based job has its challenges.
You will need the best work from home job advice before jumping in with two feet first and eyes closed.
When I started working from home online, it was a relatively new concept at the time, especially being a registered nurse. How can I provide health care services with a home based job?
One thing you will find out in reviewing my other posts and pages is that the options for home-based work are limitless.
Where do you start? If you already have a job, why not see if it can be done from home.
My basic guide for questioning if a job can be done from home is by asking the following question.
Do you spend more than 80% of your day sitting at a desk using your computer and phone as your primary work tools?
If the answer is “YES” then your job can likely be done from the comfort of your home.
Imagine no commuting, saving 1, 2 or more hours per day travel time, no coordinating grandparents to bring kids here and there, no rushing in the morning to gulp down your breakfast and preparing lunches. The list of benefits can go on and vary from person to the next.
Ok, so I sit at my desk most of the day at my current job, but there are things that I physically need to be present to complete. Like faxes that come in, things that I print and assemble or letters that need to be signed then mailed out.
You may have hundreds of reasons why your work can’t be done at home. That the other 20% of the time I have to be there.
Fine, then I will ask my next question. Those tasks within the 20%, do they need to be done daily, or can they be consolidated to be done maybe one day per week?
If “YES” then you can at least work from home four days per week, and go into the office the other day.
There are many scenarios available depending on the type of work that you do. I certainly will not be able to give you each and every answer. What I can do is give you a toolkit to determine whether you can work from home either full-time or part of the time and how to overcome the challenges that your line of work may present.
There are certainly some types of jobs that cannot be done from home. In this case, you may need to do a personal review of your current job choice. Is there an opportunity to work from home in the same field but in a different department or company? Or do you stop being an employee and start your home based business instead?
This post was meant to trigger a spark in you. Don’t just accept if your boss says there is no way you can do your job at home.
Take action, but have a plan of attack. Create a proposal, identify the benefits for the company/organization, to you and the environment.
